Dutch Pomander Pendant

A Dutch pomander pendant in silver, its dome built from openwork panels that once held scented paste, a tradition in the Netherlands dating back to the 16th century. Worn as protection against bad air and illness, and later simply as scent, before regular bathing was common. A small silver ball drops from the base like the little bells (pampel) traditionally found on these pieces. Hallmarked with the Dutch sword for 835 silver and the "N10" master mark of the Niekerk brothers, silversmiths from Schoonhoven working in the mid 20th century. Comes on a fine link chain.
